Low Cost Food Programs

AT WESTWARD HO

Food Plus

Food Plus is a the government free food program for low-income seniors 60+.  You must pre-register and meet all income and age requirements to receive a box.  For more information see one of our Westward Ho Service Coordinators.

Value Club

Pay just $15 and get $35+ in food. There are also specialty boxes available for only $10 each.  Anyone can take part in the Value Club program, regardless of age.  However, the cut-off dates change monthly, as do package contents.  For more information please see a Service Coordinator or watch the bulletin boards for sign-up dates and times.

The Pantries

This is a limited service for new residents, who have limited resources due to move-in expenses; or long-time residents who are in desperate need due to a financial setback such as an unforeseen medical expense.  You must see a Service Coordinator if you are in need of a food box from "The Pantry."

You might also check in the Video Room.  The Tenant Organization keeps a small amount of staple foods there for residents in need.  Because the supply is small, you are limited in the amount you may have at any one time.

OTHER

Many valley churches and other organizations offer free food boxes to those in need.  Westward Ho Service Coordinators can provide you with a listing of places to contact if you need food but do not have the resources to purchase it.

SENIOR CENTER DINING

While all the City of Phoenix run Senior Centers offer lunches, most require reservations at least 48 hours in advance and they charge $2.00 per person.  You can find a listing of city run Senior Centers in the telephone book.

The Salvation Army Laura Danieli Senior Center, located just three blocks away from Westward Ho at 613 N. 4th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004, is not city run.  While it does receive funding from Area Agency on Aging, it is overseen by The Salvation Army.

With the exception of a few special occasions, usually announced well in advance, no reservations are necessary.  Lunch is served M - F, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 pm. However you must sign in and purchase your meal ticket prior to 12:15 p.m.   Lunch costs $1.60 for seniors 60+ and disabled persons of any age, and $3.00 for guests under 60.

Note: Occasionally the lunch schedule changes due to a special program being offered that day.  Changes are always listed on the monthly menu and/or posted well in advance.

Menus are posted on the second floor of the Westward Ho; and individual copies are available at the Senior Center.

MARKET SHUTTLE SERVICE

The Salvation Army Laura Danieli Senior Center provides a Market Shuttle service (Tuesday thru Friday ) for residents of Silvercrest and Westward Ho.  This is a limited service (Requires a minimum number of passengers to operate.) and there is a fee of $1.25 each way.

The shuttle picks up passengers at the main door of Westward Ho.  Times of departure and other information is posted on the wall near the front entrance.
A wheelchair accessible van is available with advance notice (Call number below to make arrangements.)

For more information please call 602-251-2006.
